Annual Conference of ESOG
The conference was conducted from
May 26-27, 2004 at the Sheraton Addis. The theme of the conference was “Promoting
Skilled Attendance at Delivery: A call for action”.
The conference was attended by members, partners in reproductive health and
guests from the African region. The dissemination workshop on the
“Save the
Mothers” Project of West
Shoa zone in Oromia region and a Continue Medical Education on
“Reviewing
Maternal Deaths to make pregnancy Safer”
conducted as a pre congress activity on May 25, 2004 at Ghion Hotel.
2. ECSAOGS
Conference
ESOG participated on the 6th
ECSAOGS conference held in the Kampala, Uganda, August 2004. The theme of this
year’s conference was “bridginging the gap in reproductive health”.
The president and secretary of ESOG
attended the conference. Two scientific papers among four applicants
were sponsored by the society.
Dr. Tadesse Kitila and Dr. Ashebir
Getachew were selected to participate in the conference. Dr. Ashebir presented a
paper on “Introducing
the practice of active management of the third stage of labor for all vaginal
deliveries in a low resource
setting, an Ethiopian experience”.
Post conference events included
workshop on MDR and “increasing
access to quality reproductive health care in the context of sexual and
reproductive rights”.
A new executive committee of
ECSAOGS was elected during the general assembly. Professor Florence Mirembe
from Uganda is the president. Our society is represented by Solomon Kumbi’s
election as one of the EC members. It was agreed that ECSAOGS will have a
rotating secretariat.
3. Implementing
best practice initiative launch meeting in Africa
ESOG has participated an international
conference on Implementing Best Practice Initiative which was held from June
20-24, 2004 in Uganda, Entebe. The conference mainly focused on “Repositioning
Reproductive Health in Africa: Linking Challenges with Best Practices.” More
than 300 participants have attended the meeting from different parts of
the world and a number of papers were presented as part of knowledge and best
practice sharing activity. Members are encouraged to establish their own account

4. Strengthening
skilled care in the African Region
World Health Organization organized a workshop
on Strengthening Skilled Care in the African Region: Review of Midwifery
Standards and Practice Regulation, held in Johannesburg, South Africa. The
meeting focused on defining
the role of the midwife in the
provision of skilled care within the African context, quality of training,
reaching on consensus on minimum standards for midwifery practice and
development of plan to strengthen midwifery training and practice in the African
Region. Dr. Solomon Kumbi attended the meeting.
5. Project
Appraisal Meeting:
ESOG conducted a half day meetings 6 months
apart with the aim of evaluating its activities. Activities of each project and
future plans were presented to invited members and valuable comments were
forwarded from members.
Review of the pocket guide on AMTSL was
conducted by relevant institutions and groups before it is published.
6. Saving Mothers and Newborns Initiative
FIGO
posted a call for concept paper on its ‘Saving Mothers and Newborns Initiative’
to member societies. Expanding safe motherhood activities in other areas based
on our experiences is considered crucial. ESOG’s concept paper which
concentrates on EmOC, AMTSL and PAC is among the short listed for full proposal
development.
The mentor for the project, Claudia Hunger, a
German obstetrician and gynecologist has come and provided valuable
contributions. She was also instrumental in twining ESOG with German Society of
Obstetricians and Gynecologists, DGGG, which is in its final stage of approval.
A
half day workshop was conducted with stakeholders to review the project proposal
which was enriched and sent to FIGO in time.
7. Website Development
A
website www.esog.org.et is developed by
four ESOG members and an IT specialist with financial support from
Pathfinder-International. Members are encouraged to visit this informative and
