Message from the President
Dear members,
Colleagues, partners
Global
movement in the new millennium demands gender equity/equality and
women’s health obtain the priority it deserves. The Millennium
Development Goals of the United Nations which has four goals that are
directly related with reproductive health is an evidence.
The theme
for the 13th
annual conference of ESOG, May 19-20, 2005 is ‘MDGs in relation to RH
strategy: challenges and opportunities’. I am sure the presentation by
authorities in the field and broad discussion will enable us to
strategize our interventions based on objective ralities, scientific
evidences and best practices.
The five
year strategic plan of our society in line with the MDGs and the
recently launched RH strategy gives emphasis to safe motherhood, FP,
adolescent RH and HIV/AIDs. To translate the SP into action for better
women’s health in Ethiopia ESOG is making every effort.
The Save
the Mothers activity has continued in West Shoa zone with further
expansion to two zones with financial support form the David and Lucile
Packard Foundation. To minimize death and suffering from
unwanted/unplanned pregnancy mainstreaming emergency contraception in
the public sector is underway in selected woredas of five regions.
To
contribute for better women's health and sexual and reproductive health
rights ESOG will soon open a model clinic for victims of sexual
violence. Code of ethics for reproductive health care providers in
Ethiopia is developed. Considering the achievements FIGO extended
financial support for two more years.

In this
relation, revision of the law on abortion in the country is one step
towards reducing maternal death from unsafe abortion for which ESOG with
other partners played a pivotal role. This achievements can only be
realized by the active participation of ESOG and its members.
Expanding
safe motherhood activities in other areas based on our experiences is
crucial. To this effect, a proposal is sent to FIGO. In addition,
twining with German Society of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, DGGG,
is being established.
Our
efforts, achievements and experiences are shared on several national and
international conferences. Our website
www.esog.org.et destined to reach millions is instrumental for the
same effect.
To advance
obstetrics and gynecology a one week training course in gynecologic
laparascopy is organized for members only. Pre conference symposium on
SRHR project activities and ‘Women Centered Abortion Care’ is organized
.
Dear
Members, Partners
All these
progresses were possible through priceless contributions of you members
and the Executive Committee. Strong collaboration with Federal MoH and
RHBs is instrumental in all our efforts. The existing collaboration and
cooperation with partners will be further strengthened to realize better
SRH and rights as well as a better standard of obstetric and gynecologic
care in Ethiopia.
