A)
Prevention of PPH Initiative in Ethiopia
ESOG released its
position statement on AMTSL in November 2004. This project also developed a
pocket guide on AMTSL which is printed and being distributed.
B) The Safe Motherhood and RH Project
ESOG has started
implementing this project at Ambo, Fitche and Lalibela in March, 2005. The
objectives of the project is to improve access to life saving procedures and
ensure skilled care at delivery, expand family planning services with emphasis
on injectable contraceptives and advocacy on sexual and reproductive health
rights.
The project is
being implemented in collaboration with Oromia and Amhara Health Bureaus and the
Ethiopian Nurse Midwives Association (ENMA). The David and Lucille Packard
Foundation provided financial support for this three years project.
C) Sexual and Reproductive Health Rights Project
The main objective
of this project is to contribute towards better sexual and reproductive health
rights. To this effect, ESOG has established a model clinic for victims of
sexual violence in Gandhi Memorial Hospital. A management guideline is
developed to provide standard and quality care for the victims. Code of ethics
for reproductive health care providers in Ethiopia will be launched in a
pre-conference symposium. IEC materials on SRHR is developed in four languages.
Awareness creation workshop was conducted for media personnel. Considering these achievements FIGO
extended financial support for two

more years.
D) Mainstreaming Emergency Contraception into the Public
Sector
Mainstreaming EC
into the public sector is implemented in collaboration with Fedral Ministry of
Health and African Forum on EC (EC Afrique). The main objective of the
project is familiarization of EC by the community as it is not a common
practice in the country. The project is going to use one of the dedicated
progestron only pill which is being used in other African countries.
This pilot project
is being conducted in five regions (Addis Ababa, Amhara, Tigray, Oromiya and SNNPR) where 37 government and NGO health institutions are pilot sites.
The main activities
being carried out include development of a training curriculum in collaboration
with other partners, training of health personnel’s involved in the project,
facilitating pre-service training on EC in Addis Ababa, Jimma and Gondar
Universities through exchange guest lecturers, supporting research work on EC
in these Universities, actual distribution of a dedicated product and assessment
and analysis of project outcomes.
E) FGM Project
The objective of
this project is to improve care of women with complications of FGM in Afar
region. The main activities in this project are development of training
curriculum for management of complications related with FGM and assessment of
health facilities to suggest interventions to provide quality services.
